Law School: Hastings College of the Law, University of California, J.D., cum laude, 1987
College: University of California at Santa Barbara, B.A., 1984
Member: State Bar of California.
Biography: Lifetime Member, Thurston Honor Society. Member, International and Comparative Law Review, 1986, 1987. Extern to the Hon. Stanley A. Weigel, U.S. District Court, for the Northern District of California, 1987. Teaching Assistant, Torts, Hastings College of the Law, 1985-1987.
Languages: Proficient in English and Spanish, with somewhat less so in German, Portugese, Tagalog and Indonesian.
Professional: Brian is a highly aggressive litigator. He thrives on the challenge presented by litigating against hard-nosed attorneys. That said, and consistent with the Firm's preference for negotiated resolution, Brian tries to explore every possible avenue of resolution before filing suit and continues strategizing towards reaching a negotiated settlement including "on the courthouse steps" (read: at trial). While Brian works on the full gamut of employment law cases, he has particular expertise in sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation matters, representing both employees and employers.
Brian is very empathetic and strives to make his clients feel he understands what they have experienced, be it a fired or harassed worker suffering emotional distress or an employer who feels victimized by a lawsuit they view as "legalized extortion". To quote just one of the many thank you cards and letters he has received from happy clients: "Your faith in me and your efforts to help me have restored much of the enthusiasm and joy that was taken from me. Thank you for your tireless work on my behalf.”
Significant cases: Brian negotiated a multi-million dollar out of court settlement for several women who contracted an STD from a former lover who had misrepresented his status. In other cases, he assisted in obtaining a jury verdict for retaliation, successfully defensed claims before both the National Labor Relations Board and the Department of Fair Labor Standards Enforcement and successfully mediated numerous termination matters as well as a partnership dissolution.
Personal: Brian is a native
born San Franciscan who returned home in 1992 after a few years living
in the Santa Barbara area where he had attended college at the University of
California. Brian is an avid World traveler who has visited more than 65
countries and has surfed on 6 continents (surfing the frozen waves of the
Antarctic Peninsula remains an unfulfilled dream). Brian enjoys other
adventure sports too, such as scuba diving, hang gliding and snowboarding.
